The public library is an institution that serves democracy by ensuring that everyone can access the information they need to be an informed citizen. When we all chip in a small amount through the library millage, we create something big that can benefit everyone in our community.

Libraries are so much more than books! Libraries hold literacy events, fun and educational classes, and present special programs for the community. Libraries have computer access and free wi-fi for users. People who like to read online can borrow digital books which are sent directly to their device. Why buy when you can borrow? Save $ - get a library card!

Fight 4 the First Lapeer held its first rally in May, and is planning more rallies to support our Lapeer District Library soon! Watch for details of our upcoming June rally. We also attend LDL Library Board of Trustees as a watchdog group.

Fight 4 the First Lapeer partners with citizens and groups in the Lapeer area that support the US Constitution and intellectual freedom.

A sexually explicit drawing or information isn’t in and of itself obscenity. Books and materials with sexually explicit illustrations or information are protected by the First Amendment. Because different people have different ideas about what is obscene, the law says only courts can determine if a book is obscene. A legal test called the Miller Test which considers local community standards, national community standards and whether the material as a whole has literary value is applied to determine obscenity. It’s illegal for public libraries to have materials that fail the Miller Test. All of the books and materials in the public library pass the Miller Test.  Use this link to learn more about the Miller Test:
