The Board majority made it clear at this meeting that they will not allow differing viewpoints a voice at the table. A California firm relatively unknown to the library world, SummitHR, somehow mysteriously chose to solicit the opportunity to serve LDL and was selected by Chair Kohlman's backers. The Chair then went ahead and filled the Director Search Committee and the Policies & Bylaws Committee seats exclusively with Board and community members who openly support restricting materials.
Library Approves Budget Amendment for Legal Services
At the June 19, 2025 LDL Board of Trustees meeting, the Board approved a Budget Amendment which moved $20,000 from the Contingency Fund line to the Legal Services line to cover rapidly mounting legal expenses. There was very little discussion before approving the Budget Amendment, and no explanation offered for why the year to date total for legal services exceeds the budgeted amount of $4800 by almost $14,000. Looking at the detail, one might conclude that the Board's decision to fire previous library law specialist Anne Seurynck was a VERY costly decision.
Library Requests Legal Opinion on Book Restrictions
In February of 2025 the library requested a legal opinion on restricting access to certain books from then Board Counsel, Anne Seurynk (Foster Swift). The memo clearly outlines the constitutional issues related to restricting books and warns that restrictions could lead to expensive, losing lawsuits.
"Bright April," a children's novel written by Lapeer's own deAngeli, inspired Carla Hayden to become a librarian.
